Protecting Our Land and Wildlife for Future Generations

At Gateway Park we’re restoring over 600 acres of once heavily logged and poorly managed forest. Using science-based methods, we are reducing wildfire risk, replanting native species, and creating healthier conditions for pollinators, wildlife, and overall biodiversity.

This restoration is helping to revive a critical watershed near the North Fork American River and build long-term climate resilience in the heart of the Tahoe National Forest.

See Monarch butterflies, Desert Tortoises, and even the Foothill Yellow-legged Frog while enjoying a safe, fun outdoor experience. Every visit help keep our park’s wildlife safe and thriving.

Monarch Butterfly

A symbol of transformation, the monarch butterfly undertakes one of nature’s most remarkable migrations.

Western Bumblebee

One of nature’s top pollinators, helping plants grow fruits and seeds that feed wildlife—and people too.

Mountain Chipmunk

As they collect and store seeds, these chipmunks play a key role in forest renewal and the balance of mountain ecosystems.

California Spotted Owl

This rare and silent hunter of old-growth forests reminds us of the delicate balance within woodland ecosystems.

Northwestern Pond Turtle

One of the West Coast’s only native turtles, this quiet survivor depends on healthy wetlands to thrive.

Mule Deer

With strong legs and keen senses, mule deer move gracefully through the wild landscapes they’ve known for generations.
